How to Start an affordable Skin Care Routine as a Beginner

We can all agree that it is so difficult to find THE skin care routine to your specific skin type. Skin care can be neglected or forgotten about, some even consider it as a luxury but should rather be considered as a necessity now more than ever. I see how it can be so overwhelming with so many products out in the market, you may be confused on where to start and what to buy – especially a newbie no matter if you are a girl or boy!

I have been there a few times, so don’t worry I got you on this. You can click on anything highlighted red, it will take you to the website to find more about the products.

Create a daily routine & stick to it – make it simple

I am just going to get this off my chest, as we are talking about Skin Care now, so we can move past it and I can give you information about what you actually want to read- drink your water!!! okay phew, now that is out of the way: You don’t have to overcomplicate it – keep it simple and expand as you see fit. Start off with the basic products and see how your skin reacts. Don’t forget, less is more.

So lets talk about the 3 key steps you should have in your routine now.

step 1: CLEANSE

You should be washing your face twice a day: in the morning and at the end of your day. If you have dry skin I would recommend just washing your face with plain water or with a hydrating cleanser. It is important to cleanse in the morning to help remove any evidence of sweat or oil left from your pillow and hair during your sleep.

The most vital time to cleanse your face is at the end of your wonderful day to remove any dirt, skin cells, pollutants and your makeup. A safe options for newbies is always a hydrating cleanser – you can’t go wrong with this. Keep an eye out for one that is fragrance-free, has minimal ingredients (to avoid irritation), and has ceramides and glycerin to restore and maintain the skin barrier.

A good option for this would be the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser and the trusted Cetaphile Gentle Skin Cleanser.

Step 2: Moisturise

A oil-free, fragrance free moisturiser is always recommended as it is great for all skin types according to dermatologist. If your skin is acne prone, dry, oily or sensitive, this might be a good option for you.

At this stage you can address specific skin concerns by finding a moisturiser which is formulated with additional ingredients for your personal needs. The list of these specific ingredients is super long, so I’m going to give you a summary of three key ingredients.

  • Vitamin C: good for skin brightening, for existing problems and to prevent it.
  • Hyaluronic acid: plumps skin and restores lost hydration
  • Ceramides: good for dry skin – Crucial for skin-barrier strength and overall health

I personally use Nivea Soft as it really hydrates my skin, but for those purposes you can also use CeraVe Moisturising Cream. However, for oily skin I would recommend Neutrogena Hydro Boost as it will not block pores and won’t cause further breakouts.

STEP 3: PROTECT

If you can take away one thing from this blog post, take this one: use your SPF like your holy grail!! Use it religiously, I mean it, every day even if it is not sunny outside. Not only does it give you a glow but it protects you from ageing in the future. Make sure to get a sunscreen with UVA (for ageing) and UBA (for burning). No matter what your skin colour is, you should use it.

To summarise, if you use a good SPF you would be minimising the chances of getting skin cancer, skin spots, skin pigmentation and wrinkles.

Try this one, as it is perfect for coloured skin; it blends in perfectly and doesn’t make you look ashy: Bondi Sands Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+

You should ideally start using SPF in your teens and continue it into your 20s alongside Vitamin C and Retinol. I will be writing a different blogpost about those two products, so keep an eye out! I hope you liked this blogpost and took something away from it, if so, please share this with a friend of yours!

Till next post,

  1. Do you have any super affordable options for sunscreen for oily skin that don’t leave a white cast or have any comedogenic ingredients in them?
